Home birth is less common in the Netherlands than it used to be, but it's still a regular, well-supported option. That makes the country quite unusual. If your pregnancy is healthy and low risk, you decide where you want to give birth, and you can change your mind along the way.
Your options
- At home. Your midwife comes to you, assisted by a maternity nurse (kraamverzorgende). You're in familiar surroundings and don't need to travel during labour. Medical pain relief isn't available at home.
- In hospital or a birth centre with your own midwife (poliklinische bevalling). Your midwife attends the birth, and if all is well you usually go home a few hours later. Without a medical reason, there's often a personal contribution, depending on your insurance.
- In hospital under a gynaecologist. When there's a medical reason, including a wish for pain relief. Read more in pain relief during birth in the Netherlands.
Questions that help you decide
- Where do I feel safe and relaxed?
- How do I feel about pain relief?
- How far is the hospital, and how will we get there during labour?
- Who will be with me, especially if my family is far away?
- What does my insurance cover?
Practical preparation
For a home birth: your bed needs to be raised with bed raisers (bedverhogers), which you can borrow or rent through a home care shop. Your insurer usually provides a maternity package (kraampakket) with the basics. Make sure the midwife can easily reach your bedroom.
For a hospital birth: know the route, where to park and which entrance to use at night. Have your hospital bag ready from about 36 weeks, and agree with your midwife when to call her.
Either way: you can change your mind, even during labour. Moving from home to hospital is common, especially with a first baby, and it's not a failure.
How a doula helps
I help you weigh the options without pressure. I don't have a preference for where you give birth; I want you to feel good about your choice. At home, I help you prepare the space. If you need to transfer to hospital, I come with you, so there's one familiar face during the move.
Frequently asked questions
Is a home birth safe?
For healthy, low-risk pregnancies, a home birth with a midwife is a recognised option in the Netherlands, with clear agreements about when to transfer to hospital. Discuss your own situation with your midwife.
Do I have to decide early?
No. Many women decide in the last weeks of pregnancy, and some only during labour.
